A Calm, Thoughtful Approach to Raising Kids in a Digital World

Hi, I’m Mila — founder of SmartScreenHabits, media literacy educator, and a mom of two school-age kids.

I work with families who want to raise confident, thoughtful children in a digital world — without constant screen battles, fear-based rules, or one-size-fits-all advice.

I believe parents deserve to feel informed, supported, and confident when making decisions about technology — especially before children receive their first devices and as digital life continues to evolve.

With extensive knowledge of persuasive digital design, more than a decade of experience in community-based education, and ongoing training grounded in research and media literacy frameworks — along with my work as a recognized Common Sense Media Educator and parent of two young children — I help families navigate digital life with clarity and confidence. Let’s connect.

Why I Do This Work

Technology is now part of everyday childhood. Screens support learning, connection, creativity, and play — but they also raise real questions for families.

Many parents are expected to manage screen time, games, phones, and social media without much personalized guidance. Even thoughtful, engaged families can experience uncertainty, tension, or stress around technology at home.

What I saw — again and again — was that parents weren’t lacking care or effort.
They were lacking clear, practical guidance tailored to their unique family.

That’s where SmartScreenHabits began.

What Makes My Approach Different

There is no shortage of digital parenting advice. Books, podcasts, courses, and guidelines often offer general rules designed to apply to everyone.

But families are not one-size-fits-all.

Each family has different values, routines, children, and challenges.

Instead of rigid rules, my work focuses on:

  • media literacy — teaching kids how to think about technology

  • digital wellbeing — supporting balance, not extremes

  • practical skills — habits families can actually maintain

  • long-term resilience — not just short-term compliance

The goal is to help families move from uncertainty to confidence, and from control to capability.

Why This Work Matters to Me

For more than 20 years, I worked in marketing and advertising, partnering with global brands and learning how persuasive messaging and digital platforms are intentionally designed to capture attention and influence behavior.

Understanding these systems was part of my profession.

Becoming a parent changed how I saw them.

As my children grew, I began noticing how early — and how powerfully — young users were influenced by algorithms, immersive design, and targeted messaging. I saw how quickly habits could form — and how difficult they could be to undo.

At the same time, for over a decade, I was leading community-based educational programs and workshops for families and youth through nonprofit organizations in my local community.

In 2022, when I launched a media literacy initiative within our elementary school community, one pattern became clear: parents cared deeply — yet they were navigating a rapidly evolving digital environment with very little structured guidance.

SmartScreenHabits grew from that intersection — industry insight, educational leadership, and lived parenting experience.

My Expertise

My work today is shaped by four connected experiences:

• Insider understanding of how persuasive digital systems are designed
• More than a decade of community-based educational work
• Ongoing training grounded in research and media literacy frameworks
• Lived experience as a parent of two young children

I am a recognized Common Sense Media Educator and continue professional development through organizations such as Common Sense Media and the Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard Graduate School of Education.

While I am not a clinician, my work is grounded in evidence-based approaches to media literacy, child development, and digital wellbeing.

What makes my background unique is this combination — understanding both how digital systems influence behavior and how families can build the skills to navigate them confidently.

How I Work With Families

My approach is collaborative and non-judgmental.

Together, we:

• Look at how technology is currently used in your home
• Identify what’s working — and what feels challenging
• Clarify your values and long-term goals
• Create realistic routines and agreements
• Build skills that support independence over time

This is not about control. It’s about capability.

The goal is to move from constant management to lasting skills.

What I Believe at the Core

Technology will continue to change.

What matters most is helping children develop skills that endure — critical thinking, self-regulation, resilience, and informed decision-making.

When kids learn how to think about technology — not just follow rules about it — they are better prepared to navigate whatever comes next with confidence.

SmartScreenHabits exists to support families in building those skills thoughtfully, calmly, and together.
